Shaheen in the Working World

If you read that title and felt a shudder run through your body then you know exactly how I feel. In my six years of university I never once imagined myself enjoying a future job as an engineer. Never. Never Never Never in fact!! I always thought my first job would be in some greasy grimey manufacturing facility or an oil refinery; I'd be wearing a hard hat on with no clue what I was even doing, and getting googly eyes from factory men saying, "you're in the wrong field woman". Or I imagined myself stuck in some mind-numbing position designing a production line for something as mundane as post it notes, however useful and nifty they might be. (Okay, so bad example since I love post it notes, but you know what I mean.) Even worse, I imagined myself not knowing ANYTHING and meeting every demand with a blank bewildered face and mindfuzz. Which...actually, now that I think about it (which took a while cuz I had to get past the mindfuzz) is still pretty darn true, sooo.. nevermind. haha. Stike #3 off the list please!!

But yeah, I always wonder about those people that claim they love what they do, and they don't mind doing it because THEY LOVE THEIR JOB! Like, PUHLEASE!!! GET REAL PEOPLE!! WORK IS FOR LOSERS!! AND BESIDES!! YOU'RE AN ACTOR!!! OF COURSE YOU'RE GONNA LIKE YOUR JOB!! (unless I was a DJ of course, that would be cool). But the truth is, even though it's only been a week, and even though my job is only temporary until december, I can honestly NOW imagine myself being one of those cool people that say, 'I LOVE MY JOB!' because alhamdullilah, I. Love. My. Job!!

In fact, on my first day I sat in my chair near the end of the day just totally running a blank except for one thought...
How
the heck
did I get
this job

*sigh* Alhamdullilah. I have many interesting plans for the future but none of it involved me being happy under a corporational setting, but rather by me running the show. (Cuz DAT'S how it GO! ya kNOW!)

So the reason why I didn't tell blog world about it was because I was still reeling from the shockwave of it. (By the way, in the mention of shockwave, I was reminded of Scotty's passing, May God have Mercy, nay MERRRCy, on his soul... the magician that weilded dilithium crystals to his might and overcame failing ships as his captain romanced on nearby alien planets)

Yes so anyways, where was I? uhhhhhh Ah yes.. hahahha anyways, this is getting wayyyy too long and cheesy but you get my point. I'm shocked. I like my job. And this is where I work. www.monteris.com. I would link it but I don't want our ultra savvy programmers/network admins to find out how much I like monteris. khehehe. I have an engineering tech position in a 16 member crew starter company that's designing a minimum invasive procedure for brain surgery, and particularly in the coagulation of foreign objects/illnesses such as brain tumors. Because it's such a small company I have the freedom to wet my hands with many of the current design, manufacturing, and project management issues, so it's the greatest experience in the world, in a rewarding field, and inshaAllah may lead to further opportunities within the company. InshaAllah InshaAllah. But I won't count on it. My coworkers are amazing and I found this out from the start when on my second day, Fil randomly goes to me, "And don't worry about it, if you have to pray, just go right ahead, I won't mind." Not to mention my boss's words, "For the first few weeks, we'll give you bankers hours, 10:30-4:30 and friday's off"

That last one didn't actually pan out for today, but because my boss is Muslim (and not to mention SOO COOL MASHAALLAH!!) and my coworker Fil is so wicked, Fil gave us a ride to jummah and picked us up after he ran his errands. And that's apparently the schedule every friday.

I swear. SubhanAllah. I'm very blessed. Thank you Ya Allah.

AND THAT WAS FOR ALL YOU COMPLAINERS!! ;)

since this has become a marriage blog i got a little something to say too. last night i was up late talking to my good friend marlene. we were discussing normal stuff up until she gave me some insight on how to be married. past plenty of jokes these are the few pearls of wisdom i gathered. so this is the advice summarized in my words.

1. always [and i mean always] play hard to get

it doesn't matter if you're arguing about the same stuff. you can't let your husband know that things will come easy. make him sweat a bit and he will do nice things for you

2. if you forget to tell him something, then you can turn it around and pretend he didn't remember

the fault is always his. you forget to tell him you're going to your sister's place for the weekend. he sees your bags packed and you're saying alright asalaamalaikum see you in a couple of days and this conversation should be taking place
him: where are you going?
you: to [insert sister's name]'s for the weekend
him: what? when?
you: I TOLD YOU THIS LIKE 3 TIMES LAST WEEK
him: oh

apparently yelling helps. if you keep yelling he will think you are right

3. if you don't like it, nip it in the bud

stop it right then and there. tell him you hate it. you hate that he leaves socks in the middle of the room then he needs to know right then. take care of it or they will never realize you expect them to be considerate and realize it for themselves

that is all for now. contact my friend [link above] for advice on how to talk to:
parents
old people
animals
idiots
etc.

My Weekend Summarized

Some recent conversations:

Conversation #1:
Some lil' 10 yr old girl: Are you married?
Me: Me???? Do I look married??!
girl: yah.
Me Thinking: What do you mean I look married! *cry* Do I also look like I have 10 kids? Damnit!
Me: Are you serious?
girl: umm. I mean. noo.
Me: No? No I don't look married now? Are you serious or are you just saying that
girl: umm. I'm just saaaying that.
Me Thinking: YEAH RIGHT YOU ARE! GRR!!

Conversation #2
Some Aunty: So do you have any engagements?

Conversation #3
*Moment of silence at someone else's wedding*
Threatening Friend: You're next. I don't like having single friends.
Me: *sideways look*

Conversation #4
Some Aunty: To aap ki baari kab aarahi hai?
Me: Jee?
Aunty: Suna tha aap ki baat pakki hogay?? Uss ka kya hua?
Me: ummm
Me thinking: GRRRR!!

And here are remnants of the 80's party. Minus the nostalgia and the headband. And some people's neon tights and leg warmers, tacky earrings and bright eyeshadows. Oh and there's that nasty Rad Rana shirt I was telling you about.

Any ideas where else I can wear those earrings?
